I'm an associate professor of writing and rhetoric at BYU. I received BA and MA degrees in English from BYU and a PhD in Composition and Rhetoric from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. I co-founded and co-directed BYU's Research and Writing Center (2013-2020). I currently serve as course coordinator for WRTG 312: Persuasive Writing. I also serve on the English department's Graduate Advisory Committee, where I coordinate the department's new emphasis in digital humanities and professional writing.
Research Interests
My disciplinary home is writing and rhetoric studies, with interests in rhetorical education and writing centers. My historical scholarship has explored sites and figures of rhetorical education that advance disciplinary histories of writing and communication. My qualitative research, often pursued in collaboration with undergraduate and graduate students, has explored how to teach writing and rhetoric effectively.
Teaching Interests
My teaching reflects commitments to collaborative learning and civic engagement. I design courses with ample opportunities for students to experiment with different genres and styles of writing; to share, discuss, and revise their writing; and to reflect on their learning and development as writers. I teach general education writing courses, courses in the English department's Professional Writing and Communication track/minor, and graduate seminars on research methods and rhetorical theory in the department's Master of English (MA) program.
