Biography

Michael received his BA ('04) and MA ('09) from BYU in Portuguese and his PhD ('14) from the University of Arizona in Second Language Acquisition and Teaching. He was a Universitair Docent (Assistant Professor) of Portuguese and Linguistics at Leiden University from 2014-2016 before coming to BYU.

Research Interests

Second and third language acquisition, corpus linguistics, sociolinguistics variation, language contact, Portuguese for Spanish speakers, and Dual Language Immersion.

Teaching Interests

Foreign language education, second language acquisition, Portuguese linguistics (phonetics/phonology, sociolinguistics, bilingualism), and Portuguese language learning.
