Mike Pope

Associate Professor, Classical Studies
Department of Comparative Arts and Letters

JFSB 3043

Biography

My love of Greek and Latin led me here. And poetry.

Research Interests

My training is in the literature of the late Roman Republic and Early Empire. I am especially interested in the ethics of Epicureanism and Stoicism and how these are coopted in literature. I am also interested in how philosophers and poets conceptualize human bodies to exemplify notions of honor, virtue, femininity, masculinity, and morality. Sometimes I write about the New Testament as well.

Teaching Interests

Teaching the Iliad and Odyssey and other epic poems is a pretty good gig.
