Dr. Greg L. Thompson Announced as New SLaT Program Administrator

BYU Faculty member Greg Thompson

PROVO, Utah (February 7, 2019)—Dr. Greg L. Thompson has been named the Program Administrator of the BYU Master of Arts program in Second Language Teaching (SLaT), effective Spring 2020. Dr. Thompson, an associate professor in the Department of Spanish and Portuguese, will maintain the position through Winter 2023.

“[Dr. Thompson] is an exceptional researcher, which is a big part of graduate programs,” said Rebecca Brazzale, Assistant Director of the Center for Language Studies. “He cares a lot about the students. I think he has a lot of great ideas that will benefit the students in the program.”

Dr. Thompson earned a PhD in Second Language Acquisition and Teaching, has experience teaching graduate-level courses, and has served on the SLaT advisory committee for several years. He will succeed Dr. Jennifer Bown, who has served as Program Administrator since 2017.

“I was very honored to be invited to be the program administrator of the SLaT program,” said Dr. Thompson. “I think the SLaT program fills a vital need for the university and for the college. Hopefully, my experience will help assist the students as they maximize their educational experience in the program and as graduate students at BYU.”

The Master of Arts program in Second Language Teaching is designed to prepare graduate students for careers in world language teaching (excluding Spanish and Portuguese). Recent graduates have gone on to teach at the secondary and university levels, work in instructional design, and teach at the Defense Language Institute, among other things.
