Jane Manning James Research Grant

This grant of up to $1500 is named in honor of Jane Manning James, an early Black pioneer, and invites students to explore questions of belonging through the principles of faith, humility, and courage.

Fall 2026 application deadline: November 1 at 11:59pm

Winter 2027 application deadline: March 7 at 11:59pm

Are You Eligible?

  • Have you declared a major in the College of Humanities?
  • Will your project explore belonging in the humanities?
  • Can you complete your project before you graduate? (Pro tip: If you are graduating in April, you should apply in Fall at the latest.)
  • Is your project unfunded? (You can only receive this grant if you haven’t received other funding, like from a HUM Grant)

If you answered yes to all of these, then you are eligible to apply!

How to Apply

  • Your topic or proposed project should:

    • Relate to belonging
    • Be initiated by YOU! (It can’t be part of a professor’s research project, but it can emerge from classroom work) 
    • Stand alone (It can’t supplement another program, like a study abroad or an internship, and it can’t be done for a class)
  • You’ll need a faculty mentor who: 

    • Is a full-time faculty member in the College of Humanities
    • Knows you and agrees to work with you
    • Has expertise in your topic
    • Can meet with you regularly throughout the project

  • Deadlines:

    • Fall 2026 optional info meetings: October 13 and 14 at 2pm in 4010 JFSB (no need to attend both).
    • Fall 2026 application deadline: November 1 at 11:59pm
    • Winter 2027 application deadline: March 7 at 11:59pm

    Keep in mind that:

    • If you receive the grant, you’ll get only half of the money up front; you’ll collect the other half when your project is complete
    • You’ll be asked to account for the money you receive and spend at the end of the project

    The application (below) will ask you for:

    • A statement of purpose/significance that includes a description of the research, its scope, and its parameters (300-500 words max)
    • A statement describing expected academic outcomes or deliverables (200 words max)
      • Talk to your faculty mentor about this if you need ideas. Outcomes might include things like presenting at a student symposium, publishing in a student journal, creating a digital tool, or presenting at a conference.
    • A project timetable
    • An itemized budget
    • A list of 6-10 scholarly sources relevant to your research
